Catching up!

I returned recently from a whirlwind trip to Lafayette, Louisiana. I spoke at a beautiful women’s retreat alongside Johnnette Benkovic. Graces were flowing indeed. It was wonderful meeting all of the lovely “thirsty” women. They were there to nourish their faith and to share with one another. I told them that I firmly believe that when women gather together at times like this–WATCH OUT!–because with God’s grace we have the power to change the world!

Just prior to that my visits on Women of Grace were aired on EWTN TV. You can see all five of them here for a limited time.

12540641_1028367327184238_8267295219891598835_nHere is a recent article in a Canadian newspaper with an interview of me expressing the importance of a mother’s mission. I will be speaking about a mother’s vocation in Toronto this week end. Please keep me in your prayers.

A recent article in the National Catholic Register highlighting my Lenten book is here.

Did you know that I make these Novena bracelets exclusively for the EWTN Religious Catalogue?

Have you seen my special bracelets fitting for any woman? They are a prayer aid and help to celebrate human life. Check out the various styles here.

I need to finish a few writing projects and prepare for my trip to Toronto. Please keep me in your prayers and now that you are in my prayers!

Prayerfully Hoping & Expecting

I am sharing some wonderful news. First of all, I have bundled my book Prayerfully Expecting: A Nine Month Novena for Mothers To Be with the very new Prayerfully Hoping & Expecting Novena Bracelets. You can see that in this link on my website. The two bundled together make a lovely gift for the expectant Mom or for one who hopes to be expecting someday. But, the novena bracelet is for any woman. Please read on to see why.

Prayerfully_Expecting_Bracelet

Here’s a little about my book which, by the way,  dear Blessed Mother Teresa wrote the foreword to.

This beautifully crafted book is a reflection guide, keepsake, and prayer journal that offers inspiration for each month of pregnancy in the tradition of the popular nine-day prayer, the Novena.
Your feet are swollen, your hormones are a mess, and you still crave too much ice cream. For every mother-to-be, the nine months of pregnancy can be demanding. Competing with the joy of anticipation is the frustration of bodily pain and limitation. In this intimate book, Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle invites pregnant women everywhere to see their pregnancy not as a burden but as a living prayer to God. Connecting the nine months of pregnancy with the nine-part novena prayer tradition known to Catholics everywhere, Donna Marie shows how each month of pregnancy connects the mother to the great Catholic saints and teachers. Alongside the devotional and the catechetical helps are pointed references to the development of the child in the womb as the months of pregnancy progress. Includes a foreword by Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta and an Apostolic Blessing from Pope John Paul II.
Here is an endorsement:
A different kind of pregnancy journal. Imbued as it is with Scripture, exhortations from John Paul the Great, wisdom from Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, and both traditional and original prayers, it steeps expectant mothers in an atmosphere of holiness, reminding them that what they are experiencing is sacred.~Karen Edmisten
Here is a little background about writing this book:

I wrote this book Prayerfully Expecting: A Nine Month Novena for Mothers To Be during my own precarious pregnancy in which I was placed on complete bed rest. Very soon into my pregnancy I became deeply inspired to envision a pregnancy as a beautiful nine month novena of prayer as I awaited the birth of my unborn baby.

I wanted to share that inspiration and offer a kind of a prayer journal to other expectant mothers that could help them reflect upon their holy time of waiting, all the while as they pray and grow in holiness.

So, I put pen to paper (literally, since I did not own a typewriter or computer at the time) and I continued to write down all of the inspiration that was stirring in my heart. In God’s Divine plan, Blessed Mother Teresa would write the Foreword to this book. She had also encouraged me to continue to write for mothers and expectant mothers.

Women all around the world are using Prayerfully Expecting to create a living novena of prayer throughout their pregnancies.

Here is a little explanation about my inspiration this past Advent in which I created Prayerfully Hoping & Expecting Novena Prayer bracelets:

During the season of Advent 2015, I felt very inspired to create these novena bracelets to celebrate the sanctity of human life as well as to have a tangible means to pray for it.

IMG_2333

one of the styles

As I mentioned above, these novena prayer bracelets serve many purposes. I have made each bracelet with nine beads to symbolize nine months of pregnancy. The number nine is also very significant in praying a novena of prayer. The bracelet will be a visual reminder to pray a novena for your own pregnancy, for your daughter, granddaughter, godchild, daughter-in-law, or niece’s pregnancy, and so on. It can be used to pray to conceive a child, to pray to adopt a child, to pray for your own children and grandchildren, and to pray for every pregnancy to result in a live birth and for the end to abortion.

IMG_2362

Another style

I pray as I create each novena bracelet. Each bracelet will be constructed with an attached crucifix, Miraculous Medal, and most of them will also contain a pregnancy saint’s medal. It will be shipped to you in an attractive box with prayer cards inside. I encourage you to get your bracelet blessed so that it may serve as a blessed sacramental.

My visits on Women of Grace!

IMG_4518

I was blessed to have visited with Johnnette Benkovic, host of EWTN’s Women of Grace television show. The shows aired this past week. In case you weren’t able to tune in due to some schedule changes with EWTN’s Pope Francis visit to Mexico coverage, here is a link in which you can view all five shows at your leisure.

I hope that you will enjoy the shows. I suggest you try to watch them soon while they are live on the website.

Women of Grace this week on EWTN this week

IMG_4518

This week February 15-19 my visits with Johnnette Benkovic will air on EWTN TV.

This is the normal schedule: EWTN TV at 11 AM EST, Monday through Friday and re-airs each evening at 11:30 PM EST.

But, as I scrolled through the week’s schedule to tape them in advance, I noticed that the show will air tomorrow (Monday) at 10:00 AM ET, not at the normal 11:00 AM ET time. And I noticed that it might not air on Tuesday due to Pope Francis coverage. But, I am not totally sure. That could be just my area. Check it out on your cable.

Hopefully you will be able to tune in and see what Johnnete and I have to share with you. You might be surprised!

Catching up!

I haven’t had a chance to blog lately. I’ve had many things to report, but alas, no time in which to write them down. I’ll probably end up doing video blog posts – much better on my wrists (due to all of the typing I’m always doing and my joint pain). But then again, I’d have to put some make up on and get dressed up (at least a bit better than I am usually in my home office out here in the rural woods of Connecticut)!

Just kidding. I don’t really have to do that. You probably wouldn’t mind if I wasn’t dressed up and didn’t have make up on when delivering a message to you. After all, I am all about keeping it real. But, I think you know what I mean. The videoing requires some thinking and planning too. I’d also have to make sure that my office is clean! 😉 So, for now, I’ll simply type away and fill you in a little, at least.

I just got back from a whirlwind trip to the EWTN television network in Irondale, Alabama. There I met with Johnnette Benkovic and we were together on the set and chatted while five shows were filmed on Women of Grace. They will air in the near future and I’ll keep you posted on that.

It was wonderful to see Johnnette again and to share about the crooked path in my life and my memoir The Kiss of Jesus. We discussed some pretty intense issues. These are issues that affect countless women all around the world. I am praying that these shows will impact women’s lives and even help them to heal from deep wounds or at least get them headed in the direction of healing. Please pray for the people who will watch the shows.

The Journey of the Green Carnation on Saint Patrick’s Day

I recently traveled to Ohio to do a few things. I visited with Marcus Grodi on EWTN’s very popular “Journey Home” television show, I also did a live radio show with Mark Shea on “Catholic and Enjoying it!” which happened to fall on the evening of my filming with Marcus. And, the following evening I gave a talk to a wonderful Legatus group in Columbus.

Since I was leaving for Ohio on Saint Patrick’s day I was sort of lamenting that I hadn’t had time to bake my annual (and I always question that–why do I only make it at Saint Patrick’s day? It’s so delicious!) Irish Soda bread.I usually make it right on Saint Patrick’s day.

IrishSodaBread

made this loaf with my son Joseph in years past

I headed out for the airport with my husband. I was looking forward to what would unfold ahead of me, knowing there would be some sort of adventures in store for me in Ohio. There is usually at least one interesting encounter. I pray to be open to God’s amazing graces. I always take blessed Miraculous medals with me in case I am inspired to give them out along the way.

On the way to the airport I called my Aunt Pat on my cell phone and wished her a very happy birthday. It was her 96th birthday! She said she was doing just fine and had no aches and pains. She said she doesn’t know why she is living so long and why her siblings have passed on. I told her that I think God has more for her to do! We had a very nice chat and then she wished me a good trip.

At the airport, before I checked my bag, I was both surprised and delighted to see some sweet Irish dancers, dancing their little hearts out!

Dancers

My husband and I paused for a few minutes to watch. We were early and didn’t have to run to catch my flight. So, it was nice to have the time to observe them.

You can click here: Dancer_Video for an extremely short snippet of their dancing.

It was a very sweet treat and a perfect reminder of the feast day of Saint Patrick. As I made my way to the counter a little girl came up to me and quickly handed me a green carnation and said, “Happy Saint Patrick’s day!” It was delightful! I was very happy to have received the surprise gift.

Dancer_little

she gifted me with the green carnation!

Beaming from receiving the unexpected gift and with green carnation in hand, I made my way through the crowds to get my bag checked and also asked if I could bring the flower on the plane. I was told that it would be fine. Now I had to figure out how I was going to manage to keep the carnation from getting broken throughout my two flights and traipsing through airports and more. I usually have a shortage of hands trying to manage all of my trappings on my trips! Now, I had something else to worry about. But, I knew immediately that I wanted to give the flower to Barb, someone I had not yet met but whose Bed and Breakfast I’d be staying at that night.

I headed over to the security area and then made my way through the security process. Upon getting to the other side, I observed a woman crouched down getting her shoes back on her feet and apologizing for being in the way. I reassured her that she was just fine. She told me she needed to get to Gate twelve. Mine was to be Gate four. I wished her well and she was on her way.

After I noticed the signs, I realized that she was headed the wrong way. I yelled to her since she was already quite a distance from me. The woman didn’t hear me so I ventured closer and called out to her again. She turned around and came toward me. When she caught up to me, motioning with my hand, I told her that we both needed to head the other way. She glanced at my green carnation waving in my hand. So I asked if she had seen the festive Irish dancers earlier. She said she hadn’t seen them. I told her that I had a snippet of their dancing on my phone in case she’d like to see it.

As we walked towards our gates, I scrolled through my cell phone to find the short video and then played it for the woman as we continued towards our gates. She was delighted. When it came time for us to part as we got to her gate, I suddenly felt an urge to give her a blessed Miraculous Medal.

“I’d like to give you something.” I said as I reached into my pocket for the medal I placed there that morning before leaving for the trip.

“This is a blessed Miraculous Medal” I explained. I will touch it to the on that Mother Teresa gave me. This is Mary, Jesus’ mother. I pray that the medal brings you much grace.” And I placed it in her outstretched hand.

“Thank you!” she immediately said. “This means so much to me. My husband just died of fourth stage lung cancer.” He JUST died! I NEED this!” she told me.

I was so happy that I could give her the blessed medal. I quickly dug into my purse to get a business card and then handed it to her. I told her to get in touch anytime. She stretched out her hand to offer a hand shake and said, “My name is Esther. It’s Esther.” she repeated. “I’ll be in touch.”

I told her my name too and we parted. I quickly called out to her and said, “God bless–safe journeys! Email me!”

I arrived to my gate and sat down, keeping an eye on my flower so it wouldn’t get bent. I wanted Barb to have it. I settled down and silently gave thanks to God for the blessed unexpected encounter with Esther and said a little prayer for her. It seemed that the Irish dancer’s gift of the green carnation to me was the ice breaker in speaking with Esther, or at least it helped in continuing our conversation, giving me a bit more time to realize I needed to give her a blessed Miraculous Medal before parting.

Carnation_CarryOn

Standing in line waiting to board I noticed a young gentleman beside me also holding a green carnation. We shared with one another that it would be interesting to see how we would get the flowers to our final destinations without breaking them! I smiled and told him that I already knew who I was going to give mine to on the other side. He seemed delighted by the idea of giving his away and said he thought that maybe he would gift his to someone too!

My flight was pretty turbulent but my green carnation stayed safely in its resting place in the seat pocket throughout the flight.

Carnation_Plane

I saw that young man again when it was time to get off the plane and I asked about his carnation. He said, “Oh! I gave it away!” And he motioned behind him. I noticed a young lady carrying a green carnation and smiled at his kind gesture. Maybe Saint Patrick smiled too.

One more flight to go and I’d meet up with Scott, the producer for the Journey Home television show on which I would be featured. I met Scott just outside the airport. He drove me to his home where I’d be staying at the Bed and Breakfast while awaiting the filming of the show the following day.

When I arrived at his home, we went into the kitchen, the heart of their beautiful home, to see Barb, his wife. She was behind the kitchen counter busy with some sort of preparation. The kitchen was beautifully decorated with all things Irish! Irish songs were playing in the background too–what a perfect ambience! I approached Barb and immediately hugged her, saying, “I’m home!” and then handed her the green carnation. It sure felt like home. Theirs was a welcoming peace-filled abode and that’s why I was so quick to offer a hug to Barb rather than a simple hand shake.

Whew, I thought. At long last, the gift of the green carnation had reached its final destination. I shared with Barb that a cute little Irish dancer had surprised me and had given it to me earlier that day with the beautiful greeting, “Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!”

While Barb’s father’s favorite Irish tunes were playing, Barb explained to me that she thought that perhaps Saint Therese must have arranged that flower to come to her since sometimes a rose will show up unexpectedly when asking for Saint Therese’s intercession. She quickly added, “But, my very Irish Daddy, whom I greatly miss, would have said it was from him.”

It would have been her father’s 90th birthday that day!

Barb thanked me for the green carnation and smiling, she trimmed it and put it in a little Irish vase which happened to be empty and adorning her kitchen counter.

Carnation_Counter2

Carnation_Counter

Doesn’t it look pretty here at its journey’s end?

Later on when Barb had a chance to express what was going on in her heart and mind when I arrived at her home, she said, “It was such a surprise to receive the carnation, in the midst of a ‘perfect storm’ of circumstances.” Barb had been reading a book about Saint Therese. She shared, “I have been praying for her intercession on a specific issue.”

Everything kind of all came together in a few moments time.

Barb recalled, “My dad’s old Irish music playing, his birthday, St Patrick’s Day–there really aren’t words to describe the spiritual lift your gift of a flower gave me.”

She added, “The fact that you traveled so far, lovingly carrying that single flower, for me, really touched my heart.” Barb had a deep sense of what she described, “Sweet, precious, and holy moments our Lord gifts us with!”

The following day when sitting at the breakfast table, Barb told me that a friend had just emailed and had a little Bible message. It was from the Book of “Esther,” she said.

Esther? How interesting! Maybe God had a message for me.

I listened to what Barb read me from the email. The message was a little interpretation of a verse in Esther:

Be still for a while and praise God for His favor, His grace and His awesomeness. God is able to do the impossible and is always near. He
loves us unconditionally.

Yes, God always has a message for us. This little prayer followed:

Dear God, This is my friend whom I love and this is my prayer for her.
Help her live her life to the fullest. Please cause her to excel above her expectations. Help her to shine in the darkest places where it is
impossible to love. Protect her at all times, lift her up when she needs You the most, and let her know when she walks with You, she will always be safe. Amen!

I told Barb the story about meeting Esther at the airport the day before. And now, I have just told you! Let’s pray for Esther, who lost her husband and for all those who have experienced the recent loss of a loved one.

Since I am back home in Connecticut, I think I’m going to bake a couple of big round loaves of Irish Soda bread!

So excited to announce my upcoming memoir: The Kiss of Jesus

This is the very first time that I am unveiling the book cover of my memoir, The Kiss of Jesus: How Mother Teresa and the Saints Helped Me to Discover the Beauty of the Cross.

The publisher, Ignatius Press has just announced it on their website. You can sign up there to learn more about the book.

KJ-H

The time is getting closer. My memoir, The Kiss of Jesus: How Mother Teresa and the Saints Helped Me to Discover the Beauty of the Cross will be released in August.

Here is the very first sneak peek at the dust jacket description:

When Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle was growing up, she had no thought of one day becoming a popular author and television host. She was immersed in her life as the seventh of eight children in a Catholic family. Sometimes that life was carefree and fun, spending time with relatives dancing the festive Polkas at family weddings, and enjoying picnics in her back yard dappled with fruit trees and flower gardens. Other times, life for her was very dark and tarnished with struggles and pain. Struggles that she felt were perhaps best left a secret.

Donna-Marie retreated to the beauty of nature, thanking God for its splendors, pondering and meditating. She plunged her heart and soul into a deeper meaning of life as she tried to navigate the ups and downs in a large struggling family. She turned to God for help especially as she became increasingly misunderstood by her family and her peers.

Life took some bizarre turns, and Donna-Marie was forced to deal with a crazed man who took away her freedom and held her hostage. Eventually escaping the nightmare of her prison, she married and began raising her family, believing she had finally found her true vocation. But she couldn’t seem to get out from under the shadow of the Cross. She lost three babies to miscarriage, struggled with her husband’s serious drinking problem and was later abandoned by him just before she gave birth to her third living child.

Raising her family alone, she was subjected to abusive neighbors and appalling living conditions, struggling to overcome these challenges as she held onto hope for better days.

Her knight in shining armor finally came on the scene. Or so she thought. Another unexpected adventure ensued, thrusting Donna-Marie into a more affluent yet controlled life. “Prince Charming” had charmed his way into her life, but under the veneer of his charm was a dark side.

Survival mode took over as Donna-Marie had to fight for her life and for her children’s safety. Providentially, a saint or two crossed paths with Donna-Marie and impacted her life greatly. One was Blessed Mother Teresa who would become her close friend and spiritual mother.

The Kiss of Jesus is a powerful, moving true story of a well-known Catholic author who faced great suffering, abuse and rejection, but through faith, hope and love she found redemption and the beauty of the Cross.

5 Things That Caught My Eye…

1) When traveling out-of-state to do some speaking and book signing, I happened to be behind this gentleman at the airport. His shirt caught my eye. It was such a nice sight!

IMG_8390

2) When it comes to clean laundry, did you know that white distilled vinegar is supposedly as good or better than bleach?

ChaldeaCrows

(My daughter, Chaldea’s artwork above which she sells at her Etsy site. She has illustrated several of my books.)

According to a recent article, “The acetic acid in white distilled vinegar is so mild that it will not harm washable fabrics; yet is strong enough to dissolve residues (alkalies) left by soaps and detergents. Adding just 1/2 cup vinegar to the final rinse will result in brighter, clearer colors.”

I think I will do a load of white laundry later today and try out the vinegar! Check out the article about 10 uses for the white vinegar here.

3) A recent sentiment from Pope Francis caught my eye. “It gave us consolation and hope to see so many large families that welcome children as a true gift of God.” (Pope Francis, Wednesday’s General Audience, Vatican City,    (Zenit.org)

Pope-Francis-Dove-3x2-555x370

4) I just happened to catch an excellent and powerful episode of EWTN’s “The Journey Home” about Steven W. Mosher, President of the Population Research Institute and former Secular Humanist.

It was great show. Steven Mosher is the author of several books including: A Mother’s Ordeal: One Woman’s Fight Against China’s One-Child Policy. Mosher says he had a confrontation with evil in China as he watched late term abortions being performed due to China’s one-child policy. He was an atheist at the time. He soon became an agnostic and later on…well, you will see in this program. He does amazing work. Here is the show right here and his website here.

5) And, finally, just for fun, this short Huff Post news video about longevity caught my eye. A 109 year old woman shares her big secret to her longevity. You might laugh when you learn what she says you should avoid if you’d like to live a long life! Here’s the video.

Sharing a blogger’s reflection on “Angels for Kids”

A blogger homeschooling Mama of five shares about my Angels for Kids book:

We started our next book, “Angels for Kids” by Donna Marie Cooper O’Boyle. Let me tell you, I have only read ahead a few chapters (because I am a busy mama and I just don’t have the time or energy to read all the way ahead! I am a self-professed ‘non-reader’ anyway–I prefer to do all kinds of other things before I choose to sit down and read a book. Reading is great, I admit, but I still prefer lots of other things to reading), but I am really impressed with this book.

First of all, Donna Marie Cooper O’Boyle addresses the book to her young audience. She speaks to them in her introduction, and continues with a friendly and easy-to-understand tone throughout the chapters.

Second, it is full of beautiful Scripture references and stories of the Angels. Each chapter is full of verses, leaving no doubts that not only should we believe in the Angels, but God has given us His own words about them so that we might believe. I also like that each chapter begins with a short verse. I am using some of them as copywork for my children, and hope to also use them in prayer to help memorize verses.

Third, Donna Marie Cooper O’Boyle also references teachings of the saints and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Our history is rich in belief about the angels! She helps that young readers understand and appreciate the rich traditions we have, and by the end of the book, have a new appreciation and (hopefully) a deepening respect for (and even relationship with!) the angels.

To date, we have finished the first two chapters. (Chapter Three, “What Angels Look Like”, is on the agenda later today) Chapter One, “A Multitude of Angels”, tells us all about who the angels are and are not, (they are not fairies!), and what they do. In short, the angels are in God’s service, to aid us in attaining salvation. How fabulous is that? To finish up chapter one, I created copywork sheets for my girls with Hebrews 1:14, “Are not all angels spirits in the divine service, sent to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?” I made another for my 5yr old, with his name, “angel”, and “St. Michael the Archangel”.

Chapter Two, “Angels in the Bible”, might be the longest chapter in the book. From creation in Genesis to Revelation, stories with angels are re-told. Even though this was a long chapter to read aloud, and I wondered at times if my kids were beginning to day dream, I loved this chapter. I know the angels are in the Bible; I have heard the stories all my life. Probably everyone can at least name the Angel Gabriel, who announces the birth of Jesus. And yet, I was delighted to be reminded of not only Gabriel, but all the other angels who play a role in the lives of so many. I had many “oh yeah!” moments while reading this chapter. To finish up chapter two, my 5 yr old retold a favorite story and illustrated it, and the girls illustrated their favorite angel story.

I am keeping it simple as we read and “study” these books this year. Not only to do not have abundant time for coming up with elaborate crafts and activities, but I want our mini family “book club” to be relaxed, casual, and enjoyable. Here and there I’ll come up with a craft or recipe, I’m sure (‘cuz that’s how I roll), but at the same time, it is nice to have a family read that isn’t part of our syllabus and isn’t crying out to be enhanced with Pinterest-worth crafts. It’s the reading together that counts!

Well, that is wonderful, Gina! Thank you for sharing my book on your blog. I pray that your family is thoroughly blessed!
